The paper shows and comments the first results of a linguistic investigation conducted in several suburban areas of Rome and introduces new data regarding a phonetic feature (the assimilation of the nexus /st/) and a syntactic phenomenon (prepositional accusative). The results evidence a different sociolinguistic position of these two linguistic features and offer new interpretations of the complex structure of contemporary Roman dialect, enlightening both its constant evolution and its bond with the dialects of the central and southern Italy.
