This paper is both an overview and an original research. It examines the 1990s Italian narrative, with a focus on literary debuts, then proposes some invariants of the decade’s literary space which remain actives in the subsequent years. I identify five genres (young narratives, pulp/can- nibali, High postmodernism, genre literature, low fictionality) and five invariants: a postmodern stance; extensive use of pop culture, which forms the new common culture; intermediality and speediness; a desire for immediacy; great value assigned to the «extreme», the body and emo- tions. It is suggested that Italian narrative of the Nineties is in search of an identity, now con- ceived as a splitting of the Self or as blocked antitheses, or borderline states.
Il saggio ha funzione di panoramica e di ricerca. Disegna un quadro della narrativa italiana degli anni Novanta con particolare riferimento agli esordienti per arrivare a proporre alcune costanti dello spazio letterario del decennio che permangono anche negli anni seguenti. Si individuano cinque famiglie principali (giovane narrativa, pulp/cannibali, high postmodernism, narrativa di genere, bassa finzionalità) e cinque costanti: adesione al postmoderno; utilizzo del pop come cultura condivisa; commistione intermediale e velocità; tensione all’immediatezza; interesse per estremo, corpo ed emozioni. Si suggerisce che le scritture degli anni Novanta insistono sul problema dell’identità, letta in termini di scissione o antitesi bloccate o stati borderline.
