The second chapter (Artificial Intelligence’s (AI’s) Responsible Use: How to Manage Digital Ethicswashing) analyzes the ethicswashing phenomenon, particularly the issue of the (ir)responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), which may lead to corporate conduct not aligned with ethical principles. This is known as “digital ethicswashing”, a strategy based on misleading reporting about AI use to gain stakeholder acceptance and loyalty. The research observes digital ethicswashing practices by investigating the reliability of disclosures related to the social aspects of AI use. Owing to the issue’s novelty, the study develops an exploratory analysis to investigate how companies implement digital ethicswashing. Starting with a content analysis of external reporting, it proposes designing a dashboard to manage digital ethicswashing. Moreover, the study highlights the need to develop AI reporting audit tools to minimize such practices, thanks to the work of third-party experts.
