Stationary selfconsistent solutions of the Vlasov-Maxwell system in a magnetized inhomogeneous plasma (so called Vlasov equilibria) provide the natural starting point for the investigation of plasma stability and of the nonlinear development of plasma instabilities in collisionless or weakly collisional regimes.
