There is provided a communication system (10) comprising a plurality of signal sources (20) and a detector (60) for receiving signals from the sources (20). The received signals are subject to interference such as multipath interference and/or fading in propagating from the sources (20) to the detector (60). The detector (60) comprises filters (F1, F2, F3) and a processor (200) coupled to outputs of the filters (Fl, F2, F3), the detector (60) being operable to filter the signals received thereat to generate representations (X) of the signals transmitted from the one or more sources (20). The representations (X) include signal artefacts corresponding to multiple access interference (MAI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI). The detector (60) is operable to jointly iteratively process the representations (X) in the processor (200) for generating likelihood parameters (ML) for use in iteratively removing the MAI and/or ISI from the representations (X) in a convergent manner, thereby generating output signals (P) from the processor (200) corresponding to the representations (X) with reduced artefacts due to MAI and/or ISI.
