Abstract

Within the holistic One Health approach, rigorous attention to animal health is a crucial element in the balancing and optimization of systemic co-benefits. This need is evident despite an anthropocentric view that subordinates animal and ecosystem health to the protection of human health, regarded as the ultimate goal of all actions. In the light of this scenario, implementation of One Health within the framework of animal welfare legislation could represent a turning point in the rethinking and revision of European rules. Indeed, this approach could strengthen the legal protection of non-human sentient beings, leading to improved animal welfare standards in European knowledge society.
