This chapter summarizes the current data on the role of mitochondrial DNA mutations and mitochondrial metabolism in stem cell biology. Topics include oxidative stress in normal and in cancer stem cells, subcellular mitochondrial localization, and oxigen consumption related to the maintenance of stem cells properties and differentiation capacity. The possible use of stem cells as a therapeutic tool in mitochondrial disorders are also reported.

Abstract
This chapter summarizes the current data on the role of mitochondrial DNA mutations and mitochondrial metabolism in stem cell biology. Topics include oxidative stress in normal and in cancer stem cells, subcellular mitochondrial localization, and oxigen consumption related to the maintenance of stem cells properties and differentiation capacity. The possible use of stem cells as a therapeutic tool in mitochondrial disorders are also reported.File in questo prodotto:
