Seeds of Change: AI and Data Governance for Digitalised EU Agriculture

The increasing process of digitalisation in agriculture poses novel ethical and legal challenges. Key areas of concern include: the regulatory approach to systems engineering and big data management; data ownership, stewardship, and the potential for economic power concentration among a few market players; and the guarantees of visibility and transparency in the validation of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. This paper explores the emerging reflections and initiatives of public authorities and non-governmental bodies seeking harmonised principles within the European institutional landscape to strengthen legal concepts and rules for resilient and sustainable digitalised agriculture.
