Cptive breeding of black grouse is justified because this species id declining in most of the alpine areas, at the edge of its distribution area. Only reared black grouse originating from the alpine population, can be used for re-introducing the species in the alpine areas where it has disappeared or is endangered. The experimental breeding started in natural park and was based on fixed pairs. Since it was not possible to use artificial feed, some natural long-fibre supplementary feed with siliceous grit is alwyas given. The laying period in the experimental breeding farm was monitored. Eggs were artificially incubated. Chick were reared in commercial heated cages for the first 4 weeks before transferred to the pens The behaviour of the caged black grouses showed the typical seasonal course of the specie and no stereotypies were observed.
