The paper presents an analysis of VoIP traffic aimed at evaluating the accuracy of the the Markovian ON-OFF model, widely used for a single VoIP source. The evaluation is focused first on the statistical features of acquired traffic and then on the ability of the model to estimate the network performance obtained under actual VoIP traffic. Furthermore, in the paper two well-known models of a VoIP sources multiplexer are discussed: the MMPP/D/1/K and the Anick-Mitra-Sondhi fluidic model. The aim of the presented analysis is the evaluation of the accuracy of these models to estimate the behavior of a multiplexer with by VoIP traffic. Finally, the paper presents three different resource allocation schemes for VoIP services, all based on the assumption of the Markovian ON-OFF modeling of a single VoIP source. Two of them are based on the discussed models, while the third exploits the bufferless hypothesis of the multiplexer. The schemes are compared in terms of their ability to guarantee the required QoS, of their bandwidth gain with respect to the simplest peak rate allocation and of their complexity.
