The latest evolution of an experimental study concerning a breakdown ignition system for S.I. engines is described. The principle is to concentrate the electrical discharge in the breakdown stage, which lasts only about 60 ns, so as to increase the initial temperature, the dimensions and the expansion velocity of the ignition kernel with the final result of hastening and stabilising combustion. The breakdown ignition is especially profitable for engine operation when poor or diluted (with E.G.R.) mixtures are employed, in case of charge stratification, in two-stroke engines at low loads and in high-speed engines. Specific devices have been conceived for the electrical characterisation of the discharge and for diagnosing possible malfunctions. Electrical characteristics of the ignition system, together with experimental results on engines, are shown.
