My paper follows two different lines of research by analyzing an unknown placitum of the year 900 conserved in the Episcopal Archive of Lucca. Concerning the document as a whole, the paper aims to emphasize the fundamentally «political-symbolic» nature of ostensio cartae. On another level of analysis, it commits to retrace the vassal clientele of the marquis of Tuscany Adalbert II and its dismantling at the hands of Hugh of Provence by investigating in detail the purpose of the dispute. As a matter of fact, the major aristocratic lineages of Romanesque Tuscany, such as Guidi, Cadolingi and Canossa, precisely come from this political and social background.

Abstract
My paper follows two different lines of research by analyzing an unknown placitum of the year 900 conserved in the Episcopal Archive of Lucca. Concerning the document as a whole, the paper aims to emphasize the fundamentally «political-symbolic» nature of ostensio cartae. On another level of analysis, it commits to retrace the vassal clientele of the marquis of Tuscany Adalbert II and its dismantling at the hands of Hugh of Provence by investigating in detail the purpose of the dispute. As a matter of fact, the major aristocratic lineages of Romanesque Tuscany, such as Guidi, Cadolingi and Canossa, precisely come from this political and social background.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
