Phenotypic features and genetic relatedness were investigated for carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated in the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana during an outbreak started in April 2010. Our findings showed the wide diffusion in high-risk areas of carbapenem-resistant strains belonging to KPC-3 possessing K. pneumoniae ST512 and the alarming emergence of colistin-resistant strains, highlighting the importance to adopt strict adherence to infection control measures and antimicrobial stewardship in order to control the spread of infections.
