This book is a Festschrift for Ernesto Napoli, a distinguished Italian philosopher of language. It brings together sixteen original essays, by both well-established and emerging philosophers and linguists. The topics cover many of Napoli’s interests, from the nature of truth and reference to the intricacies of logical form, from metaphysics to the syntax and semantics of natural language. An early advocate of the theory of direct reference, Ernesto Napoli belongs to a generation of philosophers that, in the Seventies, escaped the strictures of the Italian academic atmosphere and embraced a distinctively analytic intellectual style. Through his work, his active participation in seminars and his unconventional teaching and mentoring methods, he has played a key role in the birth and growth of an analytic community in Italy. Tarski.
