The paper is an attempt to build a theoretical framework to analyse the role of communication in rural development in a phase which has been called post-rural to underline the diversity generated into rural areas by globalisation of the economy and of society. Three aspects are focused on : how communication processes generate structural change, how the shape of communication structures in rural areas affects the way social representations of rurality are formed and prevail over others, and the problem of assessment of the impact of communication on rural livelihoods. The concept of progressive rural communication is discussed, as a criteria defining which communication practices can, according to specific contexts, improve rural livelihoods and promote sustainable rural development
