The 8th International Conference on Applied Energy (ICAE2016) was successfully held during Oct 8-11, 2016, in Beijing, China. Around 800 participants coming from over 50 countries submitted more than 800 papers. After peer-review, about 700 papers were accepted. Similar to previous ICAE special issues [1–10], and [11], recommended by session chairs and the Scientific Committee of ICAE2016, authors of selected papers were invited to submit a full version of their papers for further review by Applied Energy. Finally, the papers with favorable comments by the reviewers and editors are accepted for publication in the special issue.
