Abstract

This paper discusses the usage made by later rhetoricians of the Pāṇinian rule A 2 1 72 showing how its interpretation has been bend in order better fit in the rupaka/ upamā debate. Such an interpretation has deeply influenced also modern interpreters of the rule, thus putting in the background the real focus of the set of rules beginning with 2 1 58 and ending with 72 which are better interpreted as exceptions to or specifications of the determinant / determined rule taught in A 2 1 57.
