“The Adventures of Telemachus, the Son of Ulysses”: osservazioni sulle edizioni britanniche

This essay analyzes a corpus of the translations and editions written in English (unabridged or partial versions, in prose or verse) of “Les aventures de Télémaque” (1699) by F. de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon. It throws light on the texts which were published in the UK during the eighteenth- and nineteenth centuries. The essay is divided into two sections: 1) a study (pp. 7-18) dealing with: the socio-political context, editorial and publishing policies; the philological debates and some of the most important translators involved; “The Adventures of Telemachus” and its textual developments throughout the decades; some considerations on Fénelon’s reception in England; 2) a bibliography (pp. 18-46) which brings together 130 items arranged in chronological order (1699-1883), each of them being accompanied by a short description and some information regarding available copies and book locations.

Il contributo passa al vaglio il corpus delle traduzioni e delle edizioni in lingua inglese (integrali o parziali, in prosa o versi) de “Les aventures de Télémaque” (1699) di F. de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon, pubblicate nel Regno Unito nel corso del Settecento e dell’Ottocento. L’analisi si struttura in due parti distinte: 1) saggio argomentativo (pp. 7-18), volto a indagare il contesto socio-politico e le strategie editoriali; i dibattiti filologici e il profilo dei traduttori di maggior impatto; le tipologie testuali con cui “The Adventures of Telemachus” si concretizzò nell’arco dei decenni; aspetti legati alla ricezione feneloniana in Inghilterra; 2) repertorio bibliografico (pp. 18-46), che raccoglie 130 titoli disposti in ordine cronologico (1699-1883) e corredati di una sintetica descrizione, cui si accompagnano ragguagli sulla reperibilità dell’esemplare e sui cataloghi o siti consultati.
