The purpose of this phantom study was to objectively assess physical quality of head CT images acquired by using different clinical scanners and scan protocols. The Catphan-504 phantom was imaged on five CT scanners with 16, 64 and 128 slices technology. For each scanner, two scan protocols, usually employed in routine examinations, were executed. From the set of images acquired for each scanner and scan protocol, noise level, noise power spectrum, contrast-to-noise ratio and modulation transfer function were evaluated. While the head CT image quality depended on the scanner, there was no substantial effect of the scan protocol.
