Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the mechanisms governing the political and social life of the Early Medieval Lucca, one of the most important cities of the Italian kingdom, using the numerous charters preserved in the archives of Lucca, and particularly the libelli. This type of charter is so widespread over the centuries from 9th to 11th that it strongly connote the political era marked in Lucca and Tuscany by the exceptional holding of the marquisal institutions.
