A survey was carried out on the presence of keratinophilic fungi from the coat of 291 asymptomatic sheeps within 11 flocks in Tuscany. Sixty (21%)samples were positive: 32 (11%) for Scopulariopsis sp., 6 (2%) for Microsporum gypseum, 5 (2%) for Trichophyton verrucosum and Trichophyton terrestre, 3 (1%) for Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Chrisosporium keratinophilum, 2 (0,7%) for Chrisosporium tropicum and Chrisosporium indicum, 1 (0,3%) for micelia sterilia and Arthtroderma sp. It was concluded the sheeps may play a role in the spread of keratinophilic fungi in the environment and represent a source of infection for humans and animals.
