This chapter explores how the role of food charity has evolved in the Italian context over the last decade or so as a consequence of rising levelks of (food) poverty, which were further exacerbated by the economic crisis and austerity measures. To this end, this chapter provides an overview of the key features of the Italian welfare system, traditionally lacking in terms of social provision and reliant on charitable organisations, and how this has resulted in rising need for food charity. It then analyses how the key actors involved in food assistance have developed their role and how this rople is being reshaped. Finally, it looks at recent shifts in social policy and examines the uncertain future scenarios, also encompassing the development of global food policy movement that has lately been having some effect in Italy.

Abstract
This chapter explores how the role of food charity has evolved in the Italian context over the last decade or so as a consequence of rising levelks of (food) poverty, which were further exacerbated by the economic crisis and austerity measures. To this end, this chapter provides an overview of the key features of the Italian welfare system, traditionally lacking in terms of social provision and reliant on charitable organisations, and how this has resulted in rising need for food charity. It then analyses how the key actors involved in food assistance have developed their role and how this rople is being reshaped. Finally, it looks at recent shifts in social policy and examines the uncertain future scenarios, also encompassing the development of global food policy movement that has lately been having some effect in Italy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
